Cink is Captain's Choice for Ryder Cup
Stewart Cink of Duluth was chosen to represent the United
States in the 35th Ryder Cup Matches at Oakland Hills Country
Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.,
by captain Hal Sutton. The matches, which will be held on the South course of
Oakland Hills, begin on Friday Sept. 17.
This will mark Cink's second Ryder Cup appearance. He participated in the 2002
Ryder Cup, winning one match with Jim Furyk over Europe's Padraig Harrington
and Paul McGinley.
The 31-year-old Cink has enjoyed a resurgence this season on the PGA Tour, capturing
his first Tour victory since 2000 at The Heritage Classic in April. Cink defeated
Ted Purdy in a five-hole playoff. He has seven top-10 finishes this season and
has earned more than $2.4 million through the PGA Championship where he finished
tied for 17th place.
In an exclusive interview with Points North in 2003, Cink talked about his first
Ryder Cup experience.
"The thing about the Ryder Cup when you first play in it, you just wonder, 'Am
I really going to be able to do this?' You never know until you get there," Cink
said. "Paul Azinger, one of my best friends out here (on Tour) and a guy I respect
a lot, told me after we came back that he estimates that two-thirds of the players
on Tour are scared to play in it. They would rather just not qualify rather than
to have to examine themselves in that way. That is a pretty strong statement.
I don't know if it's two-thirds, but I guarantee you there are a lot of players
who wouldn't want to put themselves through the test."
Sutton's other choice was veteran Jay Haas, who will join Cink and qualifiers
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk, Chad Campbell, Chris
DiMarco, Kenny Perry, David Toms, Fred Funk and Chris Riley on the U.S. squad.
